On February 2, the first shipment of "Kauno Grūdai" cargo successfully arrived in Kaunas from Klaipėda. Instead of using six heavy trucks, raw materials were transported by a single barge, opting for a more environmentally friendly and efficient inland waterway route.
The shipment was carried by the largest inland barge in the Baltic region – "Nemunas Lines." A total of six containers of Palmitic Acid – a key ingredient in animal feed production – were delivered to Kaunas, with a total cargo weight of 155,974 kg.
By choosing inland waterway transport:
CO₂ emissions were reduced by 2.5 times compared to road transport,
the supply chain was optimized,
logistics costs were lowered,
road congestion was reduced.
"We are pleased to have tested raw material transportation via inland waterways, as this opens up new logistics opportunities for our company. Inland water transport allows us to optimize the supply chain, reduce dependency on road transport, and lower environmental pollution. Moreover, it is an efficient solution for bulk cargo shipments, as barges can transport larger quantities at once, reducing logistics costs. This step not only contributes to sustainable business development but also encourages the expansion of inland waterway transport infrastructure in Lithuania. We hope this alternative will become a permanent part of our logistics chain in the future," says Andrius Pranckevičius, CEO of "Kauno Grūdai."
Following the success of this first shipment, the company plans to organize regular inland waterway transport routes. This will ensure a sustainable and efficient supply of raw materials while reducing environmental impact and contributing to the modernization of logistics solutions in Lithuania.
